November 6 and 7

Villa Bianca: The Pact

Unlocks at midnight on Saturday, November 7

You are invited to Villa Bianca.

In 2012, eight of us made a stupid pact over a shared bottle. This Saturday at midnight, it comes due.

Coco should be here. She can't be. We'll toast her vintage and play a game in her honor.

To RSVP, post your numbered word in the group chat. When all eight are up, you'll know when to arrive.

What everyone knows

This is a murder mystery running from Friday dinner to midnight Saturday. You are playing your character all weekend. On Friday, your character attends a dinner party where the host runs a murder mystery game. That game is only one part of the story. Pact members, keep your key card on you until midnight Saturday.

Everyone keeps their own first name. In the story, you are all in your 30s.

The Pact

In August 2012, eight friends shared a bottle of Jeremy's first wine and each put $1,000 into Bitcoin as a joke. It was Coco's idea, and she wrote the rules. Each member received one index card with one numbered word on it. Only Coco ever knew the whole sentence, so only she could have taken everything, and that made people nervous. The fund is now worth $168M and unlocks at midnight on Saturday, November 7. With seven members left, each share is worth $24M.

These are the rules everyone remembers:

  • Attendance: Hand in or show your card by midnight.
  • Survivor clause: A member who dies before midnight loses their share, and the survivors split it.
  • Clause 7: A member proven to have killed another member forfeits their share.
  • Clause 8: A member who sells any part of a share forfeits all of it.
  • The last night: Every member seals their word on a slip and hands it to the senior member, Mark, who gives them to the Executor in the morning. Coco's joke was that you have to trust someone once.
  • Your card is private: Show it to no one unless the Executor asks. The Executor is the Pact's lawyer, Mr. Jinx, whom nobody has seen in years.

Coco

Coco Laurent held the group together. On Saturday, August 9, 2014, the group rented a house at Lake Arrowhead, and she disappeared that night. Searchers never found a body. Her death was ruled an accidental drowning, and the group slowly fell apart over who got rich, who got famous, and who got left behind.

Mark has now invited everyone to his home, Villa Bianca, for a memorial dinner and the unlocking.

How to play

  1. Read this page and your private character sheet twice before Friday.
  2. Keep your sheet to yourself, even from your partner.
  3. You don't need to act or dress up. Talk as your character would.
  4. You can invent small details about your life. Don't invent facts about the night Coco died or anyone else's secrets.
  5. At Friday dinner, cards will be at your seat. Follow them.
  6. You can dodge any question and deny anything you've done, but you can't invent facts about anyone else.
  7. Mark is also the narrator. If he gives directions out of character, follow them, whatever is happening to his character.
  8. This site has sealed tabs. Each password is announced when it's time. Log in under My file first, so your private page shows at the top of each tab, above any evidence everyone shares.
  9. All times are story time. If a document disagrees with what you remember, the document is correct.

How you win

At the end of the game, everyone fills in a short ballot. Whoever gets the most right wins.

Game rules

  1. Keep your secrets. Never show anyone your sheet, cards, or files unless the game tells you to. You decide if and when to say what you know out loud.
  2. Story only. Nothing is ever added to real food, drink, or medicine.
  3. Don't cheat. Don't open sealed files early, guess passwords, look at anyone else's phone or cards, or ask Mark for hints.
  4. No outside help. Don't use AI, search engines, or anyone outside the game to work out the story. Use your phone only for this site during play.
